I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your photo spread of East Kirkby. I was an American Airman stationed there in 1958 and have many fond remembrances of the base and the area around it. We lived in Chapel St. Leonards while stationed there and loved that area also. Not too much remains of what I remember. I was back there several years ago, and it seemed that there was a large farm in the midst of it. Anyway, congratulations on a nice photo spread and for thanks for the memories

This hangar was not present during WW2 but was built in the early 1980's. It is named the "Canadian Hangar" because much of the money to erect the hangar was given by ex members of the RCAF. It was originally intended to house the replica Halifax Mk3 bomber that was build by volunteers under the leadership of Ian Robinson MBE. A grant for a large proportion of the cost was given by the Lottery Fund.

This is part of the arrestor installation. This channel held a 'spring-leaf' that kept the arrestor wire 5" above the ground level. The idea was that the aircraft arrestor hook would 'catch it'. This installation NEVER had any operational use whilst at Waltham (Grimsby). IanR

My Fathers brother was killed at Riccall he was 21 yrs old. I belive a Halifax bomber requested to land in poor visibility in May 1943. The CO refused permission and would not turn on the landing lights, for some reason, but the bomber had no option as it was low on fuel returning from Ops and had engine failure, it was based at Snaith. Apparently the pilot landed and crashed through the Nissan hut where Robert was sleeping he and a number of other boys lost their lives. The crew survived. The CO was removed from Riccall, The RAF version was that a Guard came back into the hut following Guard duty and feeling very cold poured some aviation fuel into the pot bellied stove. Looking at the pictures just makes me wonder if my uncle walked along those paths and went into any of those buildings. Thanks very much. Michael.

This building is not a Link trailer as they were 50ft long and this building is 60ft. Eah brick pier stands at 10ft centres so you can quickly guestimate the building lengths. Could probably suggest that it might be a flight office. Ian

My father was based at Bardney from 1943-1945. He was a Navigator on WS-U Lancaster and of the crew whereby George Thompson received his VC posthumously. I visited Bardney and the airfield 2 years ago and find these photographs absolutely brilliant - you try to imagine how life was in the disused buildings and it is a credit to everyone involved in this site. Many congratulations and keep up the good work ! Kind regards Edwina Stanley (Ted Kneebone's daughter)

The RAF Swinderby photos brought back some memories of my basic training in 1976. Was the 'Tech site building', photo featuring a small paint store, located towards the far side of the airfield. If so, it is probably the building in which we recruits were made to experience gas! About 10 of us at a time were made to march around in a circle in this tiny gas filled building. We wore gas masks but one by one we were made to remove these and recite our name, rank and service number. If the corporal didn't like you he would get temporary deafness and make you repeat yourself!!

I found good aerial evidence of the legacy of the airfield footprint using a 1:10,000 aerial image of the location from multimap.com. You can easily orient your self by spotting the SEastern most "spectacles." From there you can see changes in vegetation colour indicating where the taxiways and runways lie. type this url into your browser to see: http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=545500&Y=364500&width=700&height=400&gride=546000&gridn=365000&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=&pc=&zm=0&scale=5000&out.x=2&out.y=7

Hi saw your picture while browsing and noted your doubt about a Vulcan landing a Lindholme. I do know of one landing, i was stationed at Lindholme from 1960to64 and was on the fire service crash crew when we were told by a/c control that a Vulcan was on final approach for a touch and go. The aircraft touched down and deployed it,s brake chute and came to a halt on the runway. I was on crash one and was told to go to runway to gather up chute and remember my gloves sticking to the ice on the chute "hook". The Vulcan taxied to a dispersal where it waited to be later prepared for take off. Rumour went round that the aircraft suffered a flame out when asked to "go", but on all four engines?. Don,t know the exact date of this visit or if any more came after i was demobbed. Good sight i enjoyed. Regards

Hi Noel, Congratulations on a brilliant site. When I was researching for my book 'From Hull, Hell and Halifax an illustrated History of No.4 Group' I visited all the Yorkshire sites during the 1970's. On a visit to Pocklington I was exploring the control tower (now demolished) on the north western side of the airfield. Whilst inside I heard voices nearby. Going outside there was nobody to be seen and all was deserted. I wonder if you or anybody else has experienced strange incidents whilst exploring these old sites. Keep up the splendid work. Chris.

This plaque was dedicated by the Air Cadets at Bawtry, who until recently were housed in one (if not the only) last remaining buildings of RAF Bawtry Hall, The building was demolished during the early part of 2007 and a new HQ built. We still parade at this memorial on Remembrance Sunday and lay a wreath to the fallen pilots. Any ex-servicemen who wish to join us on the parade are more than welcome. We depart our HQ at approximately 10:30 on the closest sunday to the 11th every year.

This ops board is post war when No.1 FTS used Elvington as an R.L.G. It depicts which of the skeleton staff from Linton was present on a particular day. I never did see this so I suspect it was located in the buildings located near the control tower where the duty fire and rescue crews operated from. I was responsible for all the radio equipment installed but there was no radar at Elvington only a CRDF that gave the bearing of aircraft relative to Elvington.

I was stationed at Swinderby most of 1957 working in the tower as an Ops. Clerk. At that time there were three (I think) squadrons of Vampires, one single seater Mark 5's (I Think) and two Mark 8's. There was I recall a unit of the Iraqi Air force stationed there for flying training. At that time we also used RAF Wigsley as a satelite. Four years ago I came across your Old Airfields site when I was thinking of doing a project for the BA photography course I was doing. My tutor talked me out of that however I did find the research and visiting old sites interesting.

This collection of Nissen huts, there were two lots standing opposite each other, were in fact Crew Locker Drying rooms, much modified. There were two long buildings and a short one. This shorter one used to house the boiler room but they had beed demolished a long time back. These buildings had a fresh life in the filming of the Memphis Belle, repainted, they can be seen in the film for briefing the crew and then, them leaving for their operation.

The original 'MTGAS' pump behind the main stores was replaced in about 1966 with this more modern pump after an disagreement with a refuelling tanker. This too has suffered a similar fate after an attack by vandals.

I believe this collection of buildings to be the station workshops. Picket door on the left and two large doors for excess. The centre section was the office and passageway between the two workshops. Similar buildings at Goxhill and Holme-Spalding Moor. Ian

Many thanks for these pics....my mother Jean Brackenbury aged 10 saw this a/c come down whilist playing with friends from the village of Bicker. There are still pieces of this a/c in Bicker peoples sheds to this day....mum had a piece of perspex from it for years. She often wondered why they left the crews remains in the field and why no-one put up a memorial. Jean died in 2006 but several of her friends remain in the area.

This 'unknown building' was the N.F.E. much modified and yes it was used for us then ATC cadets, as the waiting room for AE flights. As i recalled there were no facilities in the buildings for refreshments other than just a waiting room with a few chairs and desk. Ian R

I am moved to see the memorial plaque to the crew of LM378. My father-in-law was Jim Neailey (I note that his name has been spelled incorrectly but most people struggle with the "i"!) the Flight Engineer who survived. I am sorry to have to report that he died of a heart attack on 3rd December 1973 at the tragically early age of 49, he would have been 50 in 1974. It is wonderful to see that he and his crew have been remembered.

The ops block when the V Force were at Scampton was on the side of the airfield, left corner. This picture actually shows HQ, where I worked, and the current car park in the 1960`s was for motor cycles and cycles. opposite here was the station post office, and Gibson Block where were billited. Brings back some good memories, and bad ones I may add.

During the Second World War there were a number of RAF stations within a few miles of Newark, from many of which operated squadrons of the Polish Air Force. A special plot was set aside in Newark Cemetery for RAF burials and this is now the war graves plot, where all but ten of the 90 Commonwealth and all of the 397 Polish burials were made. The cemetery also contains 49 scattered burials of the First World War. A memorial cross to the Polish airmen buried here was erected in the plot and unveiled in 1941 by President Raczkiewicz, ex-President of the Polish Republic and head of the war-time Polish Government in London, supported by General Sikorski, Commander in Chief of the Polish Forces and war-time Prime Minister. When both men subsequently died, General Sikorski (aged 62) in 1943 and President Raczkiewicz in 1947, they were buried at the foot of the Polish memorial. General Sikorski’s remains were returned to Poland in 1993, but there is still a memorial to him at Newark. Friends of Newark Cemetery laurencegoff@yahoo.co.uk
