| RAF East Moor was constructed on land to the east of the village of Sutton - on - the - forest. Opening in the summer of 1942 it was originally a 4 group bomber station and housed 158 squadron.
East Moor though will always be associated with the RCAF 6 group bomber command. Housing amongst other squadrons, 429 (Bison), 432 (Leaside) and 415 (Swordfish) also present later was 1679 HCU. The airfield was standard heavy bomber construction with three runways, a technical site to the west (on both sides of the road) a bomb dump in woods to the southeast and dispersed living accomodation to the south and southwest. East Moor closed in the summer of 1946, the RCAF had left the year before leaving the airfield to be occupied by 54 OTU and it's Mosquitos, these leaving for RAF Leeming in the summer. This marked the end of East Moor as an RAF airfield and it quickly returned to agriculture and light industry. Today the peritrack and sections of runway survive. The bomb dump retains it's access roads and a couple of buildings, although the ramps appear to have been broken up. The technical site has been taken over by light industry although a few original buildings may still be seen. Also buildings are still standing in the dispersed areas, the best preserved being on the ponderosa caravan site where the Gym and chancel serve as the club house. |
